planting containers

Today we finished planting the containers in Pudsey centre. 2 plants had been stolen from a container by the park so we removed a prostrate rosemary from the container by the market (which had 3) to replace them. We had asked the council to remove the old shrubs from the planter by the bank but they had also removed the mahonia from the one by the market so we replaced that with an upright rosemary.

After rearranging all the plants the containers looked great again, especially now the daffodils are starting to flower.

This was the container by the bank before; the shrubs were very leggy -

We have replaced them with shade loving plants because the container is under a tree. We used a polystichum munitum, 2 polypodium vulgare, a carex 'Evergold' and a ophiopogon planiscapus nigrescens.

We also started taking photographs of the town for the portfolio, however, we didn't get many because it started raining!

We have also found out our judging date, the 8th of April.

Meeting

Today we decided to do beds in front of leisure centre as well as the area on Lowtown. They currently have puny little wallflowers in so they desperately need replanting. We'll use perennials and ferns.

We have started to received money from businesses for summer hanging baskets.

Walk around Pudsey

Some members of the group met today to walk around Pudsey to see what is looking good and what needs improving.

Meeting

We have decided to buy 10 new barrier troughs and discussed what to plant them with and how to reduce watering. The children from Lowtown Primary School have done some posters to be put up in local businesses and these look very impressive. We have also received a donation from Pudsey Flower Club.

Planting up the containers

Members of the group met in Pudsey today to plant up the containers around the centre. We also weeded and pruned the beds near the carpark, bus station and leisure centre a bit and we are hoping to do more later.
This is the one next to the market; we removed the dead shrubs, left the mahonia in and planted 3 prostrate rosemaries, 1 heuchera 'Melting Fire' and 2 carex 'Evergold'.

This is one of the containers by the entrance to Pudsey Park. We planted in it a stipa arundinacea, 3 heuchera 'Melting Fire', 1 dierama and a prostrate rosemary.

The containers are looking good now, even though it is still February. We have one more to do, the one by the other market entrance, but it contains some big overgrown shrubs so we'll have to return another day with more tools to remove them. We also planted some ferns and a carex in the container by the library.

Seating area

We have permission to plant up this seating area on Lowtown and the council have removed the old rose bushes. We are going to plant perennials which will look good all year round.

Plants!

We bought the plants for the containers today; here they are, ready to be planted next Thursday. We have chosen combinations which are striking and colourful yet tough and low-maintenance so they should look great all year.

Meeting

Some members of the group have pruned the shrubs in the car park in Pudsey centre since the last meeting. Next Thursday we are going to replant the containers to make them more eye-catching.

We are hoping to do up a seating area on Lowtown which currently has some boring-looking rose beds. If we can add lots of plants which have interesting flowers and foliage and scent too we can make it a great place to sit and relax.

Meeting

We have changed our route a bit to include some new places, such as Lowtown Primary School. The pupils from the school are also going to design posters to put up in windows.

First meeting of the year

The Pudsey In Bloom group had their first meeting of 2008 today. We found out we had received some grants and discussed potential gardening projects we could do and some ideas for new containers around the town. We also have a new Treasurer, Tracey.
